[I 003 / Aurangzeb] emerged triumphant in the battle with his three brothers for the throne. He went on to reign for more than 40 years (1658 - 1707). It was he who, for two reasons, oversaw the decline of the much celebrated [G 15 / Mogul] Empire. The first was the all-consuming Deccan campaign and the second a complete reversal of the conciliatory attitudes towards other religions displayed by some of his predecessors. Aurangzeb ruled until the day he died and was succeeded by his second son, Bahadur Shah.
